Deer released from its cage

In 1976, a small number of deer were brought from the Madhumalai forest to Brindavan, and the grounds were cordoned off for the deer cage. Everyday, Swami would feed the deer with apples. A small cage inside also had a few partridges and parrots. Some students were blessed with the opportunity of maintaining the cages.
One day, as Bhagavan was coming towards us after feeding the deer, looking at our faces pressed against the mesh, with a twinkle in His eye He indicated the students and told an elderly devotee, "These are two legged 'dear'. Those are My four legged deer. All are dear to me." We were thrilled by His statement.

Years later, it was a hot summer day in 1988. The time was around 2:30 p.m. In the place of the old bungalow, now stood the new Trayee Brindavan. A few boys observed a strange spectacle. A female deer was looking longingly up at the window of the rooms on the first floor, where Bhagavan lived. There is only one language - the language of the heart. What prayers the deer (which was among the first deer to come to Brindavan) addressed to the Lord, we shall never know. But the response was swift.

The doors of Trayee opened, and Bhagawan walked quickly down the marble steps, across the hot marble floor, instructing the students to get some apples. He entered the cage and patted the deer affectionately. As the fruits were brought on a tray,
Swami fed the deer with His own hands. The deer ate the apple pieces quickly.

Swami finished feeding it, and after patting it lovingly, He left. After a few minutes the deer collapsed. Its hour had come. The Lord had entered the cage to release the soul encaged as a deer. Had he not said, "All are dear to me."

SAIMA IN ALL WALKS OF MY LIFE

AN INCIDENT DURING PUTTAPARTHI STAY ON 22nd OF DECEMBER 2010:-

I and my sister, Sruthi, reached Puttaparthi around 5pm on 21st Dec 2010. I prayed Swami for just one dharshan when I started from home! We got accomodation in Shed No.4, meant for ladies only. As we were informed that Swami didn't come for evening dharshan that day, we didnt go to Kulwant hall but arranged our baggages in the shed and went for dinner. Luckily, we got some cardboard pieces to cover the broken floor where we were meant to sleep for two days. I and Sruthi lied down side by side and were sharing memories and thoughts related to Swami. Meanwhile, Sruthi said, "Why can't Swami make someone to clean this shed. See, how dusty and webby it is?!" I repliedd what came to my mind, "Just visualize we are lying down in Swami's room and swami is lying on the bed beside". Our conversation ended there and we were taken to the dream world. The next day when we came to shed after morning dharshan time and after having breakfast, we were astonished to see something! Someone was cleaning the shed! See, how quick Swami is, in his reply; in his action. On the same day Swami blessed us with a ravishing dharshan at evening.

There's a story behind this poster, which is interesting because "God Is" is one of the three aphorisms being used this year to study what Swami says that He has come into this world to give us, the other two aphorisms being "I am I" and "Love All Serve All".
On 25 March 2010, two Sai devotees were on the subway in New York City. They were new to the subway experience, so they carefully watched as the train moved from one station to another. They chatted happily, but kept a look out so as not to miss their stop.
But, just when they thought they were about to reach their destination, the train suddenly seemed to have passed their stop and brought them to 102nd street. TheyI quickly realized that they had missed (even when they were paying close attention) their stop and needed to get on another train going back downtown to 98th street.
They got out, walked over to the opposite platform for another train going back just one stop. As they got inside this train, to their complete astonishment, they spotted this poster with beautiful colors showing in a very bold print the words- GOD IS in the center pasted on the train wall. It was amazing, because in the past two weeks they had been discussing "God Is" in their study circle. They immediately knew they had missed their stop so they could discover this Poster, GOD IS !!!
Upon inquiring, they found that about 1000 subway trains will be carrying this ad as a spiritual drive from the Trinity Church on Times, with the goal to remind everyone of God's imminent presence.

SAIMA IN ALL WALKS OF MY LIFE!!!

When you hold my hand Saima,
I feel free to walk in dark

When you walk with me Sai,
I feel crowds to support me

When you support me Swami,
I feel accomplished!!!

Full Text of Swami's Divine 29th Convocation Message

Students, Embodiments of Love!

All of you want Swami to say at least a few words. You feel, “How nice it would be if Swami speaks for a few minutes”! However, I don’t want to say anything about the present system of education.

This land of Bharat has given birth to many noble women like Savitri who brought her dead husband back to life; Chandramati who extinguished wild fire with the power of truth. Sita who proved her chastity by coming out of blazing fire unscathed and Damayanti who reduced an evil-minded hunter to ashes with the power of her chastity. (Telugu Poem)

At first, Chandramati was fear-stricken by the raging forest fire. She along with her husband and son was surrounded by flames of wild fire. Nobody could say how they were all of a sudden surrounded by the raging flames. This, in fact, was a divine play. Ultimately, when Chandramati utilised her power of truth and chastity the fire was extinguished in a trice.

As Chandramati prayed, there was a heavy downpour. On one side there was a raging fire and on the other side started a heavy rain, and ultimately the fire was completely extinguished. Savitri was also endowed with great power of penance and chastity. She could even stop Yama (Lord of Death) from taking her husband’s life. She argued with Yama and told him, “The life of wife depends upon her husband and that of the husband on his wife.

One cannot live without the other. So, if you want to take my husband’s life, take my life also. Or else, spare his life. We are not separate from each other. It is my primary duty to safeguard my husband’s life”. Ultimately, Lord Yama had to revive Savitri’s husband. Is there any country or region in this world where one can find a woman like Savitri who could bring her dead husband back to life? Such divine power is latent in every human being. Man should draw this power from within himself, which he can utilise not only for himself but for others also.

During those times, wife considered her husband as her very life and vice-versa. But, unfortunately, the situation is not the same today. This sacred land of Bharat is surrounded by the seven seas. In this land, many women like Damayanti, Savitri performed intense penance. They are all women of great chastity. But today we do not find such women of great chastity.

A Pativrata (chaste woman) is one who considers her Pati (husband) as her very life and depends entirely on him. A Pativrata is one who does not talk back to her husband. There will not be even a little defect in her. She does not have any selfish desires. All that she does is for the sake of her husband. She would not even look at any male other than her husband.

Only such a woman can be called a true Pativrata. But modern ladies do not follow their husbands. They do not listen to what their husbands say. When the wife follows her husband and the husband follows the wife and both lead a life of harmony, then the entire country will attain peace and prosperity. It is due to the differences between the husband and wife and disunity in the family that the country is subjected to one trouble after the other. Both husband and wife should understand each other and adjust with each other.

A Pativrata who strictly obeys the command of her husband can do anything. If she prepares food for her husband with saline water of the ocean, it will be changed into sweet water. When the wife obeys the command of her husband and the husband fulfils the desires of his wife, then the future of the family will be safe and secure.

If they act contrary to this, the family will be subjected to great suffering. Both husband and wife may conduct themselves in a decent manner when they are in their house. But as soon as they step out of the house, they indulge in all sorts of evils. If there is no unity and harmony between wife and husband, there is no use of undertaking spiritual practices like Japa, Dhyana (chanting, meditation), etc.

When the wife follows her husband and the husband follows his wife, there is great happiness in the family. Strive to achieve such unity and harmony in your family. Then, your entire life will become happy and peaceful without any worries whatsoever. All your worries are of your own making. They are not given by God. God is not at a distant place. He is immanent in man. You should have unwavering faith in this truth. Then there will be happiness not only in the individual but also in society. Pure heart is the temple of God. Therefore, develop love in your heart. You will attain everything in life.

There will be peace and happiness in the family when both husband and wife share the same views. A Pativrata is one who has no other thought of anybody or anything except that of her husband. A woman who leads her life with such unflinching faith in her husband can achieve everything in her life. When both follow different paths, then there can be no peace and happiness in the family. You should not allow your mind to waver this way and that way. You should totally focus it on God. Contemplation of God is the basis to achieve unity and harmony in the family. When the wife prays to God, the husband will become a good person.

Chaste woman of yore like Sita and Damayanti had single-minded devotion towards their husbands. Sita was held captive in Lanka for ten months. But never even once did she look at the face of a male person. She spent all her time in the contemplation of Rama, sitting under a tree in Ashoka forest. She did not move out at all. As she was such a great chaste woman, she could prove her purity through Agni Pariksha (test of fire).

God is only one, not two. He is the indweller of your heart. If you constantly contemplate on Him, you will also become God. Whomsoever you come across, consider them as the embodiments of divinity. That is the principle of divinity. On the other hand, if you follow the vagaries of your mind and move about arbitrarily here and there, how can you become God? When you go to your college, why should you look here and there and indulge in vain gossip? Focus your mind on the purpose for which you have come. Do your work without developing unnecessary contacts. Look after your family. There is nothing wrong in this. Nobody tells you to give up performing your worldly duties. Live in the world and perform your duties. But always have divine feelings.

Many people go to places of pilgrimage like Badrinath, Amarnath, Kedarnath, Bhadrachalam, Tirupati, etc., in search of God. They think that they can find God at such places. Oh foolish man! God is not somewhere else. In fact, you yourself are God. God is present in all. God is only one and He is present wherever you look for Him. He is in you, with you, above you, below you. God is beyond birth and death and indwells every being in the form of Atma. He is present in all human beings right from a child to an old man. The same God is present in an ant, a mosquito and in all birds, beasts and animals. Therefore, do not go in search of God here and there and trouble yourself.

Wherever you see, God is present there. Whomsoever you see, there is God in him. God has no different form. All forms are His. That is why the Veda declared, Sahasra Seersha Purusha Sahasraksha Sahasra Pad (The Cosmic Being has thousands of heads, eyes and feet). When you sit for meditation, your mind wanders here and there. You should not allow the mind to waver and keep it always steady. When you go to a seashore, you will hear the waves making the sound of Om! When you concentrate on that sound, you will forget everything.

Since you are all young, I wish to emphasise this point. Do not develop opposition or differences among you. Controversies give rise to many troubles. These days some people marry not once, not twice, not thrice, but even four times. This is not a good practice. Be single-minded. Even if somebody makes you angry, do not fight with him. Understand that by fighting with others, you actually harm yourself. Control your thoughts. This is the quality of a truly educated person. This is called educare.

Along with education, you should also have educare. When you have educare, you will have everything – health, happiness, peace and prosperity. This is what I want you to understand. Everything will become good to you if you make your heart pure. At least from today onwards, take to the right path. If somebody tries to put you on the wrong path, do not pay any heed to him. Even if such a person comes to you and tries to start a conversation with you, do not even look at his face. Just ignore him and go away from him.

Students should live with unity in all matters. But today unity has disappeared altogether. On the other hand, enmity is on the rise. When one student in the class secures high marks, other students start feeling jealous of him. This should not be there. Because jealousy gives rise to hatred. There will be further divisions if politics enter the educational institutions. Therefore, all students should live with unity and solidarity.

You should achieve unity. There is no unity in the youth today. First and foremost, the youth should come forward to help each other. The end of education is character. If your character is good, then you can achieve anything in life. You may think you have won gold medals, acquired high degrees and achieved name and fame. But if you lack character, these degrees are merely a piece of paper. It is most essential for you to safeguard your character. Only such a person is a truly learned one.

When Ravana was taking Sita away to Lanka, she dropped all her ornaments in a bundle which fell a mountain. Rama and Lakshmana, while going in search of Sita, were shown this bundle by Sugriva. Rama asked Lakshmana to see the ornaments and identify if they belonged to Sita. Then Lakshmana replied, “Brother! I never looked at the face of Sita and therefore I do not know whether these ornaments belong to her or not. I can recognise only the anklets as I have seen them while offering my obeisances to her feet everyday”.

Sita, Rama and Lakshmana lived together in the forest for almost fourteen years. But not even once did Lakshmana look at the face of Sita. What a pure-hearted person Lakshmana was! Whenever he had to talk to Sita, he talked to her with his head bent down. As he was such a noble person, he could enjoy the wealth of proximity of Rama. When Lakshmana fell unconscious in the battlefield, Rama said, “If I search, I may get a wife like Sita but not a brother like Lakshmana. I can bear the separation from Sita, but not from Lakshmana”. Such was the strong bond of love between Rama and Lakshmana.

Students also should develop such unity considering all their brothers and sisters. All are human beings. All are the children of God. Therefore, you should live with unity without giving room to any differences. This is My message for you today.

Regarding Swami's health

Many Sai Devotees have written some wonderful Articles about How we should approach the aspect of Bhagawan's Physical Health, Or should we ?, Bhagawan knows everything about our Health and Also His. Everything that happens is only due to His Divine Will.

Quoting  Kasturi's writings:

Swami had an attack of cerebral thrombosis and He was in bed for eight days, from 29th June to 6th July 1963.  His left hand, left leg and eyes were affected, and His right hand was also slightly paralysed. 6th July was Guru Poornima day and the devotees were in gloom. Swami was brought down from His room by a few devotees, and He was placed on the Silver Chair in the Prayer Hall. Swami asked Kasturi to announce the following message:

" This is not Swami's illness; this is an illness Swami has taken in order to save one. Swami has no illness, nor will He get ill at any time. You must be all happy; that alone will make Swami happy. Your joy is Swami's food "

Then Bhagavan sprinkled a little water with His right hand on the striken left hand and left leg. After a little massage with his right hand of the affected parts, Bhagavan doffed off the disease in a trice. He started to speak and the devotees, who up to now were in gloom, were choked up with emotions of relief and happiness.

Swami spoke:

For those who have no refuge, God is the refuge. That is exactly the reason why I had to take on the disease that one helpless Bhaktha was to suffer from. He would not have survived it, nor could he have come through the four heart attacks I took on. My dharma is Bhaktharakshana (meaning saving of devotees). Of course, this is not the first time I have taken on the illness of those I want to save. Even in my previous body at Shirdi, I had this responsibility. This is my Leela. My nature. It is part of the task for which I have come.

It is how we Percieve Swami is and His Divine Message and His Divine Mission that makes us what we are . Once Bhagawan beautifully and wonderfully said to a Very Innocent Question as to why He is always happy and Smiling that "I see Myself in each and everyone of you, That is why Iam always happy", If Swami can see Himself and His Divine Form in all of us, Can we not see His Divine Form in Others and everyone ?. It is for every individual to decide.

A"SAI RESET" FOR THE BUZZER

A buzzer is an electronic signaling device driven by an electronic circuit. It is commonly used to indicate that a button has been pressed with a ring.Electronic buzzer find wide application in modern days.
You might be thinking how come a buzzer became a topic for my post .Because today was the day which redefined buzzer for me and my sis.Our school conducted an all kerala quiz competition 'NOVANTHA 2010 ' for higher secondary students.there were five rounds and the final round was BUZZER round. My sister and her two friends made the buzzer for this. They set everything earlier.

Today was the day of competition .Obviously I was the one who is in charge of the buzzer control. As soon as the bell rang I rushed to the language lab to check the buzzer.I was half paralyzed when I realized that it was not working properly. It had some problems with the reset button. Some students later said that since the lab was open yesterday somebody would have done this.Anyway there was no other option in front of me since my sister and her friends were having the university exams the very next day.I started praying to swami. After chanting sai gayathri me and my 3 friends switched it on once again.Only we 4 were present in that room.

As a final try before informing others I asked them to sit as contestants and asked the question to spell om sri sai ram.One of my christian friend pressed the button and she answered the question with complete faith that swami will take over the control of the buzzer. To our surprise the buzzer worked properly. We did a no. of trials and left the room having decided to face the fate with faith.

It was 1.30 pm ,the grand finale of the quiz began.I WAS CHANTING SAI GAYATHRI ALL THE TIME .I had informed my sis about the buzzer and she was also praying hard because she was sure that she couldn't reach there before the quiz starts. We left everything in the divine lotus feet and it was time for the buzzer round. The quiz master asked me to show the audience and contestants that the buzzer was working properly. YES MY LOVING SAI MAA DID THAT.Everything went well, the demonstration ,the final buzzer round and even the tie breaker was with the buzzer.
From this incident I learnt 2 things
  1. YOU SEEK REFUGE IN THE LOTUS FEET OF GOD,YOU SHOULD NEVER GIVE UP.WHEREVER YOU GO THE DIVINE FEET WILL PROTECT YOU.
  2. BUZZER IS AN ELECTRONIC AUDIO SIGNALING DEVICE WHICH IS CONTROLLED BY MY LOVING SAI MAA

CONVERSATIONS WITH SAI MAA

Prof. Anil Kumar: Swami! We do both good and bad deeds. Don't our good actions nullify the evil effects of our bad actions? Don't they at least balance each other? In other words, will our good actions cancel the bad effects of our misdeeds?

Bhagavan: You are thinking like a Commerce student, along the lines of credit and debit. But, God is a Super Divine accountant. His balance sheet is not of your type. He will make you face the consequences of your actions, good for good actions and bad for bad actions. He will not add or subtract any of the consequences of your actions.
A small example: Suppose you have some seeds of both thorny plants and fruit-bearing trees. What happens when you sow them? The seeds of the thorny plants germinate into thorny bushes while the seeds of the fruit-bearing trees grow into fruit- bearing ones. Germination will never happen in any other way. The same is the case with your sinful deeds and the meritorious.
You must have seen persons who vow to offer ten thousand rupees to Lord Venkateshwara if they win a lottery of ten lakhs. Can't they understand that God, who can give you ten lakh rupees, doesn't expect your ten thousand rupees? They don't think reasonably and logically. People think according to their worldly standards. But, Swami wants you to spiritualise your mundane actions as well.

SALUTE THE GOOD AND THE BAD

You must bear in mind the company you keep. Kabir said, "I salute the bad and also the good!" Kabir was asked: "We can understand you offering salutations to the good, but what is the point in offering salutations to the bad?" He replied, "When I salute the bad, I am saluting them, saying, please remove yourself from my presence. I salute the good, saying, please come to me!" You must avoid the company of the bad and cultivate the company of the good. Association with the good is pure yoga! I desire that you should pursue this kind of yoga and confer happiness on all people with whom you are associated!

You should strive to get rid of all your bad thoughts, give up all your bad traits, discharge your obligations to your parents, render self-less service to the community and thereby redeem your lives and earn the grace of God.

CONVERSATIONS WITH SAI MAA

Sadhana, The Inner Door

Prof. Anil Kumar: Swami! What are the sources of our peace, happiness, wealth, comforts and conveniences? How do we get them? Why are some denied these most coveted things?

Bhagavan: You don't get anything in life for nothing. One gets these things in life because of any one of the following three reasons. Take one simple example: You know banking. You are an account holder. Suppose you want some money. What should you do? You go to your bank and get the amount. But you should be having enough money to your credit and by submitting a cheque, affixing your signature you can withdraw the money you want.

If you have nothing to your credit in the account; you don't get any money. Yet, you need money. How to get it? If you mortgage your permanent assets like gold or landed property, the bank will give you some money proportionately. You may not have permanent assets. Still you want money. Then, if a rich man stands as a surety or guarantor, the bank will give you the amount you need. Thus these are three ways of getting money from the bank.

Here money is God's grace. If you are doing some good deeds in the present i.e. depositing some amount of money in your account, you can withdraw the money of God's grace in the future. If in the present there is no such credit, at least the good deeds you did in the past, that is to say, your permanent assets when mortgaged to the bank, entitle you to receive money. Without these two good acts you may still be eligible to draw money from your bank if a rich man i.e. God or an Avatar or a Sadguru stands as your guarantor.

“Do you know God?”

“Do you know God?” once asked a religious preacher when addressing a group of people gathered to listen to his discourse.

A simple looking man stood up and said, “It is not important that I know God. What is important, God knows me. And He looks after me.”

The preacher kept quiet, stepped away from the podium, and walked away.

If you have the faith that in sun and shower God is with you, you know all that you need to know. That is enough to call forth His power to restructure your life. In fact it is now His responsibility to remake you for His work. No wonder the preacher had little else to say. Only when we experience darkness, do we know the value of light. But sometimes adversity strikes the most unexpected.

SAIMA IN ALL WALKS OF MY LIFE!!

I'll share with you my experiences and visions I acquired from the youth camp I attended on October 1,2 & 3 at Puttaparthi, ma beloved swami's place (physically). These are just some very silly thoughts. But Swami always taught me through very simple ways!! SAIRAM............

30/09/09
Friday

Reached Puttaparthi for my second youth camp.It was already half past 2pm when we reached there. Didn't take bath, but took a quick wash over hands, face and legs as we had to hurry for dharshan. We entered Kulwant hall at 4pm and Swami's students started chanting vedas.Quickly I was thrown into dozing with Sai Gayathri on my tongue, lips and in my heart.I remembered, always at the first sight  of Bhagwan I used to beblabber unknowingly. But, at that time i had no any hard feelings or longing. But when Swami entered the hall in wheel chair, at my Saima's first sight itself, at the very moment, I started weeping.Don't know what magic Swami has done in me. The only thing I knew was that, Iam weeping. Wailed and wailed and wailed...Then I could help to stop for some minutes. Then again went on wailing...During the whole bhajan time I was weeping; wailing loudly. Felt like, I lost something precious which I was longing for and got it back in the whole form... Felt like sharing my whole burden with a friend..Felt like weeping on the lap and under the arms of a mother...Then I could understand that I was longing for these days to get a dharshan of my Mother; my Friend; my Swami...I could cry loudly as the bhajan sound helped me not to disturb others beside me! I prayed hard that "Swami, I wanna cry burying my face on your laps.." Something miraculous (chamathkar) happened to me.! When I opened the eyes partly, could find that my tears are ochre colored, color of Swami's gown..I swear, it happened; I was not unconscious..! But that was for some seconds.. Felt like I was crying on Swami's lap. After sometime, everything came to as usual..First I thought, that may be due to reflection of light on the tears. But never I found that ochre color again, again when the tears veiled my eyes....!

Oh Swami......; how far we are apart' still you are always with me to hear and answer whatever I ask.........!MY BELOVED BHAGWAN............

"LIVING WITH AWARENESS"
The youth camp started at 7:05pm with Bhagwan's blessings..Introduction was by Sri Mukunthan Sir,Kerala State President,Sai Seva Organization.First class was taken by Sri.K.P.Ramachandran Nair (Unniyettan),Kerala State Coordinator,Sai Seva Organization. He talked about bringing a CONCEPT (GOD) to a PERCEPT(AVATHAR)..He is really an authority of experience. He shared with us how Swami saved him from the dreadgious disease, cancer...
One more thing, It was very rainy on the day we reached there. But the organization and we devotees had such a firm faith that there won't be any rain during our camp. The organization prepared the shamiyana with that full faith on the open ground. And there was no train from the registration onwards till the last day of our camp during any of our classes...

Today's classes were by Sri.T.G.Krishnamoorthy, Sri.Vijay Menon and Dr.Deepak Anand. T.G.Krishnamoorthy Sir talked about the importance of Karmayoga; how to relate god in our every deeds. He also talked about his car accident and how wonderfully Swami protected him.Sri.Vijay Menon gushed over non-vegetarianism. Such a powerful voice was his that each and every word penetrated deep into the heart.Sincerely speaking, a magnanimous character. Evening session was carried by Dr.Deepak Anand, a doctor of Swami's hospital, who has such a wonderful commitment and closeness with Swami. He took class on how a Sai Youth should be. He gave:
Y O U T-Truth H-Humility..He told about Swami's wonderful leelas in his life and his family.

Today I could understand that Swami is hearing my prayers, my questions, my doubts and watching all my deeds..Today I was confused that how can I do my daily morning sadhana from my hostel, as my roommates may be disturbed! Another doubt was that how can I convince one who asks me, what is Swami?I got the answer for these two questions which tangled my mind during Deepak Sir's class.Swami was talking through the tongue of Dr.Deepak Anand. He said that the best sadhana is the one to which we are more inclined to by birth. Now I have the answer that I could have done service! I love doing service,if Swami ever gives me a chance. In the same class, he told that SWAMI IS LOVE.. Yes, that is the more accurate, convincing answer for what Swami is!!!!!

Sunday
Today was one of the most wonderful days in my life! Swami blessed me with such a miracle today. The matter which Iam going to tell may be a simple coincidence as you feel, but its something wonderful for me as I could feel Swami's presence always now!
Today during dharshan, I asked Swami for Swami's sight and towel..I asked like this, "Swami, you are Sarwantharyami (living in all hearts) right!if so, even if we are this much distant apart, you should be hearing me and I want your handkerchief." Before that I asked for his look at-least once. I was longing for one because I had a plan to start my Karmayoga.Only with Swami's blessing I may do that, I felt so! Swami blessed me with a look from where he was sitting! Still, not satisfied completely, I asked for his handkerchief.. After aarathi when Swami started going back, I was repeatedly asking for Swami's towel in my mind!!!!!!When Swami's car's wheels turned to the way to residence my mind simply thought that, WHAT, IF SWAMI'S CAR COME BACK THROUGH THE WAY WHERE WE ARE SITTING, SO THAT WE MAY SEE SWAMI ONCE MORE, I WOULD FEEL? The moment this thing passed through my mind ,SWAMI'S CAR TURNED TO THE WAY IN FRONT OF US. See how beautifully Swami wiped off my doubt that 'if Swami is Sarwantharyami.....!'See how wonderfully Swami proved that HE IS SARWANTHARYAMI.......(Living In All Hearts)

SAIMA IN ALL WALKS OF MY LIFE!!

Kodipranams at the lotus feet of MY BHAGWAN...Let me start here with my humble experience today which lead me the way to this blog-
Today I got the opportunity to take part in the last day of our Beloved Bhagwan's 85th birthday programme in the Kottayam district. In  my memory, ever since, Iam having a personal desire relating to Swami that, I want to get Paadanamaskaara! I used to include this in my prayers (conversations) with Swami till date. But, from the speech of Dr.N.Gopalakrishnan, Director, Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage, in the programme today, Swami told me that i should ask for what I deserve! At that moment, a question flashed in me, 'Swami, do I deserve your Paadanamaskaara?' My Inner Swami replied, 'You should do something that make you favorite for me, that make you deserve Paadanamaskaara!' Next question popped up in me, 'Swami, give me a GREAT MISSION of you, to be a part of.' (the foolishness in my question is very well answered by MY LOVING SAIMA). My Inner Swami replied, 'Make great of anything you do!'

After coming outside, when it was time for us to come back to home, my cousin sister, Maheswary told me about the  blog and told me that she will invite me to write here. See, how lovely, how compassionate, how sympathetic, MY SAIMA is! Here, in this blog, I got the call for the GREAT MISSION, spreading SWAMI'S MESSAGE! Yes, for me this is a CALL FROM MY SWAMI. Honestly, Iam not asking for Paadanamaskaara to Swami in return, as this itself is Paadanamaskaara. So today onwards I'll be here, whenever Swami give me a call, to share my experiences relating to Swami, silly or great (however you feel :-)  ). I beg your apologies for any kind of errors and mistakes in my writing and vision and humbly request you to correct me, then and there. At the right moment I feel my Outer Sai, I feel my SAIMA's presence!

CONVERSATIONS WITH SAI MAA -

Direct Directions from the Divine

Bhagavan: Viewed spiritually, Ravana's destruction at Rama's hands teaches you that in spite of your physical strength, intelligence, wealth, the might of a large army, the power of your deep penance, if you become a victim of desire of a low order or lust, you will ruin yourself totally.

There is another inner significance to this event. At the gate of Vaikuntha, Heaven, were two guards by name Jaya and Vijaya. They were discourteous to two sages, Sanaka and Sananda who came to visit Lord Vishnu. They cursed the two gatemen and consequently they had to leave Vaikuntha. Then, they prayed to be pardoned and begged them to suggest a way out. As atonement, the sages counselled them to opt for three births as demons, living in utter hatred of Lord Vishnu and dying at His hands, paving thereby the way for their early return to heaven. Thus, Jaya and Vijaya were reborn as the demon brothers, Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakasipu, Sisupala and Dantavaktra, Ravana and Kumbhakarna – all these duos spent their lives in bitter enmity with Vishnu, and died at His hands; this enabled them to reach their original place in Vaikuntha.

Ravana's acts should be viewed in this context. If he entertained any bad motives in abducting Sita, how is it that he did not touch her all through the period of her stay in Lanka? Unless he abducted Sita, Rama wouldn't fight with him. So, to fight Rama in open battle was the only way for Ravana to die at His hands. The climax of the Ramayana, the victory of Rama and the death of Ravana, indicates how Ravana's heart pined for his lord, Rama.

MAY- 6 ESWARAMMA DAY

More fragrant than the sweet smelling flowers like jasmine and lily, softer than butter, more beautiful than the eye of the peacock, more pleasant than the moonlight is the love of a mother. Human life is a journey from 'I' to ‘We’. In this short journey, you have to detach yourself from the body and develop attachment towards the ‘Self’. For this, mother's grace is very essential.-BABA

A HOUSEHOLDER’S LIFE – THE VEDIC WAY

The Stage Of The Householder
W shall now look into the life of a disciple after returning from the Gurukulam.
He returns home, rejoins his family, and with the consent of his parents and relatives, marries and settles down to discharge his duties in life along with his wife, as ordained by the scriptures. I shall commence with some verses chanted during the marriage ceremony. But first, a few words of introduction about the concept of marriage in Vedic times.
It is remarkable that almost all societies, independently established the custom of marriage, whereby a man and a woman enter into a holy and life-long alliance, raise a family and try to enjoy a prosperous life. Invariably, in every community around the world, marriage was not merely a case of entering into a social contract, but also had a religious side to it, besides being an occasion for celebration and festivities. Marriage was the commencement of a new chapter in the long story of the sustenance of the human race.
These days, marriage is often seen as the culmination of a romance, with focus largely on the physical union. Indeed, the excessive stress on the physical has reached a point where, during the last few decades, marriage is no longer considered necessary. A couple come together and live together as long as they please without any concept of social responsibility or of sin. Concepts such as marriage are considered to be old-fashioned, irrelevant, and even meaningless. To ridicule tradition is regarded as being very progressive and modern.

Marriage In The Vedic Times
Things were very different in Vedic times. Humans did not see themselves as freewheeling individuals but as a vital part of a cosmic whole, in which everyone played a part as ordained, to sustain the wheel of life and Dharma. Dharma - that was the key word. The Brahmin, in particular, had not only to personally uphold Dharma to the best of his ability but also had the responsibility of guiding others in doing the same. In this task, the wife was his partner, and that is why the word used for wife was Sahadharmini, meaning ‘one who participated with equal right, in upholding Dharma’.
How did the couple uphold Dharma? Not merely by being truthful in all their actions but also by discharging their various duties. Maybe I shall come to that a bit later, but for the moment let us take it that in Vedic times, marriage was more than a matter of procreation and propagating the human race.
Swami has, in some of His Discourses, especially a memorable one given during the Summer Course of 1996, described the marriage of Rama and Sita. He said on that occasion, that this was no ordinary marriage – it was the coming together of Paramatma and Prakriti, meaning the coming together of Cosmic Consciousness as represented by Rama and Divine Shakti or Divine Energy as represented by Sita. In a sense, the union of a man and a woman in holy wedlock symbolises the coming together of complimentary parts, to make a whole.

Turning to the marriage ceremony itself, it was a pretty elaborate affair, that included the father giving away the bride to the bridegroom. Here it is pertinent to recall what Swami said about the marriage of Rama and Sita. There was the holy and sacred fire and Mantras were being chanted both by Janaka the father of the bride and Rama, as appropriate, guided of course by celebrated Rishis like Viswamitra and Vasishta. At one point, Janaka says, here is my daughter Sita. Rama was expected to turn towards her and take a look at her. He did not. Emperor Janaka repeated the statement again; once more, Rama did not turn to look in the direction of Sita. When Janaka repeated that statement for the third time, Rama said to Janaka, “I am not yet formally married, and an unmarried man must not look at other women”. One might say that this was the limit, but that was how seriously the observance of code of conduct was taken in those days
Marriage Vows Made Before The Sacred Fire
One striking thing about the Vedic marriage is the central role played by the sacred fire. Agni, the Lord of fire, plays the role of a witness, and all declarations and promises are made with Agni as the witness. This is the equivalent of taking an oath placing one’s hand on the Bible or Quran or whatever. In the Vedic system, the entire marriage was performed with Agni as the witness. Once one swears by Agni, one is supposed to keep one’s promise, come what may.
Incidentally, Swami narrates an interesting incident that occurred during Rama’s wedding. One of the promises that the groom makes is that he would fulfil the wishes of his wife or something to that effect. When the priest chanted that Mantra, Rama was supposed to repeat it. He did not. The priest chanted a second time and once more Rama remained silent.
The priest then said, “Rama, you must chant the Mantra.” Rama said in reply, “I am sorry but I will not.” “Why?” asked the priest. Rama then said, “I belong to the royal family. One day, I would have to rule as a King. For a King, his subjects must always come first, and only then his wife. If I make this promise, then it would require me to give top priority to my wife, which would go against the Dharma of kings.” So you see, we have here yet another example of the primacy given to Dharma.
Turning to some of the rituals, the groom takes the hand of the bride, and this by the way is probably the first time he touches her. And as the bride gets up, she is supposed to step on a stone, placing the tip of her right foot. At that time, the groom says,

Come, step on the stone; be strong like a stone,
Resist enemies, overcome those who attack you.
After this, the bridegroom pours some parched rice into the bride’s joined palms and says,
This grain I spill,
May it bring well-being to me,
And unite you to me.
May Agni hear us.
Agni is not only the witness but also a protector. After the bridegroom finishes saying those words, the bride pours the grain into the fire – perhaps, this is symbolic of conveying the appeal to Agni. The groom then continues:
This woman, scattering grain into the fire, prays:
Blessings on my husband.
May my relatives prosper.
The couple then walk around the fire with the groom chanting suitable Mantras symbolic of their union as man and wife.

After this comes the famous ritual of the seven steps, during which the bride takes step after step, while groom says:
One step for Vigour,
Two steps for Vitality,
Three steps for Prosperity,
Four steps for Happiness,
Five steps for Cattle,
Six steps for Seasons,
Seven steps for Friendship,
To my devoted.
After the seventh step, the bride remains still while the groom says:
With seven steps we become friends
Let me reach your friendship,
Let me not be severed from your friendship,
Let your friendship be not severed from me.

Next, touching the heart of the bride, the groom says,
I hold your heart in serving fellowship,
Your mind follows my mind,
In my word you rejoice with all your heart,
You are joined to me by the Lord of all creatures.
The couple then depart from the wedding site, the bride following the groom to his house, or rather the house of his parents. When they leave, they carry in an earthen pot a part of the sacred fire, which they are supposed to keep alive throughout their marriage. Fire thus becomes the constant witness in the lives of the couple. When the couple reach the house of the groom, he says,
Enter with your right foot,
Do not remain outside.
There the couple sit in silence till dusk falls and the stars become visible. The couple then go out when the husband points the pole star to the wife, saying,
You are firm, and I see you.
Be firm with me, O flourishing one!
Brihaspathi has given you to me,
To live with me a hundred years,
Bearing children by me, your husband.

I am not sure if I have given the flavour of the Vedic marriage rites but if I have managed to convey the cosmic view they had of marriage in those times, then I would have done my job.
What Is Our Dharma?
Let me get back to this Dharma business. Dharma is often translated as righteous conduct. To us with a so-called secular vision, right conduct might mean being truthful, not harming others and so on. Yes, all these do form a part of right conduct, but in those times, duty was the corner stone of right conduct. A man might never tell a lie, a man might never harm another person, but if he was not true to his duties, then he was straying away from Dharma.
In life, duty called for, among other things, the expression of gratitude. These days, seldom does one realise what one owes to others. After the end of the famous battle of Britain, Winston Churchill said in a tribute to the young men of the Royal Air Force, “Never have so many owed so much to so few.” In life, each of us owes so much, to so many, starting from God.
The Five Yajnas
In Vedic times, Yajna was one of the means by which various debts were discharged. Swami says,
There are five Yajnas prescribed as mandatory for every human being.
Let me now list these five Yajnas spelt out by Swami. They are
Rishi Yajna,
Pitru Yajna,
Deva Yajna,
Athithi Yajna,
Bhuta Yajna

I shall now explain what each of these Yajnas mean, starting with Rishi Yajna. It was the Rishis who gave the scriptures, especially the Vedas. One therefore owes an expression of gratitude to the sages of old. How does one thank them? Well, by remembering them for a minute and then studying the scriptures intently. One was not expected to just turn the pages but remind oneself of all the dictats mentioned therein.
Next, Pitru Yajna. Normally, the word Pitru means parents, but in Vedic times, Pitru also meant ancestors. We really do not realise how much we owe to our ancestors. Indeed, if today we are well off in many respects, it is in no small measure due to the sacrifice they made in their time.

Here I am reminded of a talk that late Mr. V.K.Narasimhan, then Editor, Sanathana Sarathi, gave to Swami’s students in the Divine presence in Trayee Brindavan. Mr. Narasimhan said, in his own inimitable style of course, “Many of you students dream of going to America because that seems like the land of milk and honey. But do you know that if America is prosperous today, it is because of the tremendous hard work and enormous sacrifices made by the immigrants of last century? You want to enjoy the benefits of their sacrifice but what about your own contribution? This country needs sacrifice, and you must stay here and do what the immigrants did in America a hundred years ago. If you did that, then this country too would become prosperous.”
Talking of America becoming rich, I am reminded of a nice story involving the famous film actor and comedian Danny Kaye, who was once the UNICEF Ambassador, bringing love and cheer to children all over the world, especially in countries where there was much suffering. Danny Kaye’s father came to America from Poland maybe in the very early part of the last century. As you perhaps know, hundreds of thousands of people from all parts of Europe poured then into America, seeking a better life. Danny Kaye’s father was one of them. After a few years, he returned to his hometown in Poland for a brief visit. His friends back home immediately surrounded him and plied him with all sorts of questions about America. One of them asked, “Is it true that in America the streets are paved with gold?” Danny Kaye’s father said in reply: “No, it is not true that the streets in America are paved with gold. In fact, most streets are not paved at all, even with stone. And do you know what my job is? Paving streets with stone!” So you see, there is no free lunch ever, and for whatever benefits we enjoy granted to us by Society, we have a duty to be thankful for it. In the Vedic age, the expression of gratitude formed an important part of one’s life.

OK. So far, I have dealt with two Yajnas. Now on to the third Yajna, the Deva Yajna. This meant offering reverential homage to the presiding deities, especially those associated with the forces of Nature. Why should one offer such homage? The ancients believed that if we have rain, we owe a duty to express thanks to the god of rain.
If we get sunshine, we owe a duty to the sun god, and so on. In this day and age, all this might seem amusing if not downright stupid, but I will put it this way. We need not exactly pray to this deity or that, but we could at least pray to God Almighty for the sun, the wind, rain and so forth, without which we would all be dead? Besides, do we not have an obligation to keep the elements of Nature pure, meaning not polluting, air, water, and land?
I cannot but recall here a Trayee session many years ago when I was privileged to be present, along with Swami’s students. Swami said that modern man ridicules the ancients as being superstitious and stupid. Modern man says, “Look at those fools. They worship the land, the water, the air, and even snakes. How idiotic!” Swami then said, “The ancients did not pollute the air, they did not pollute water, and they respected all the constituents of Nature, including all animals. But modern man, besides polluting heavily land, water and air, is also destroying entire forests, and wiping out many species of animals, without concern for eco- and bio-balance. Who is more stupid? Modern man who is wrecking all the gifts of God, or the ancients, who not only preserved what God gave them but also were thankful to God for the blessing?”
One cannot give a more powerful assessment of Vedic life and philosophy. Incidentally, this respect for ancestors and the environment is to be found in many traditional cultures, for example among the American Red Indians. Only, the Vedic seers saw the Universe in a much larger cosmic setting than did people of other cultures, as I shall perhaps explain in a later lecture.
A couple of words now about the remaining two Yajnas, namely the AthithiYajna and the Bhuta Yajna. The former involves offering cordial and loving hospitality to guests, while Bhuta Yajna means doing everything one can to sustain all components of the environment – plants, trees, fishes, birds and animals. The husband dutifully performed all these Yajnas, and the wife rendered all the support that was necessary.
Family Duty
Before I proceed further with the Vedic journey, I think it is worthwhile for me to pause for a moment and reflect on the above Yajnas, especially their relevance to modern times. To many, all these may appear to be an utter waste of time but instead of focussing on the procedures associated with Vedic rites, let us concentrate on the basic principles of Vedic life. The first thing is the concept of a family. The family is the atom of Society, and it has been so throughout history, in all places and all cultures. It is only in recent times, that the traditional concept of the family is being severely rocked with practices that seek to make marriage irrelevant, all in the name of personal freedom.
I recall reading, when I was the Vice Chancellor, a Convocation address given by a Canadian lady, an educationist, to one of our Universities. She said that a hundred and fifty to hundred years ago, most people in Canada lived on farms. Every farm was run by a family, and all the farm work had to be done by the members of the family – the father, the mother, the sons and daughters. Since all did more or less the same type of work, there was no question of gender bias and there automatically prevailed a sense of equality. The Canadian educationist then said that when Canada started getting industrialised and more and more people started moving to the cities, things changed suddenly and dramatically. Many men went to work in offices and their work took them on tours. They could then have a good time while on the road, drinking, spending time on the golf courses, visiting nightclubs, and so on. The women, on the other hand, slogged in the home, doing kitchen work, bringing up the children and so on. The lady said that was when feminist feelings started to rise and become strong.
The Importance Of Gratitude
What I am getting at is that when life strays away from duty, imbalance results. In Vedic Society, the focus was always on duty, responsibility, and the sustenance of Society as well as Nature. Analyse every Yajna that I mentioned, and you will find the undercurrent of duty. Let us take Rishi Yajna as an example. One may say, “Why should I be bothered? I don’t care for the Rishis.” The point is not being bothered about Rishis but that one moves forward on what we have been handed down. You know what Newton the great scientist said? He said, “If I have been able to look farther than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulders of others.” We do this all the time in Science. We can’t say, “This Galileo, he lived five hundred years ago. His is old stuff. Forget it!” We can’t do that. When we teach first year physics, we have to teach what Galileo, Newton and even Archimedes discovered. There is an essential continuity in knowledge, in all branches.

We can’t also say that “Newton is relevant but the Rishis are not.” Let me tell you that it was the ancients who gave us our first ideas about planetary motions etc. They it was who first made almanacs. In India, the neem is used for a hundred things on account of its wonderful medicinal properties. This knowledge, about the medicinal properties of neem, turmeric, etc., comes to us from very ancient times. We cannot scoff at them, can we?
In short, Rishi Yajna must be seen as an expression of gratitude to our ancients for everything they have given us from the discovery of fire and the invention of the wheel, to developing agriculture and metal forming. Expression of gratitude is a sign of refinement; ingratitude, on the other hand, is a sign of uncivilised behaviour.
As for Pitru Yajna, it does not mean performing some kind of rituals but remembrance of dead ancestors and, more important, being ready to perform any sacrifice for one’s parents. The compulsions of modern life have become such that people have been slowly conditioned to giving importance to their own personal security in terms of money, job, career and so on. Inevitably, parents slide down in priority, especially when they have fulfilled their role. The next thing is that they are seen to be as irrelevant and a nuisance. This is not a Western attitude but a global one.
I recall seeing two wonderful dramas staged in the Poornachandra Hall many years ago on the occasion of the Chinese New Year Day. In both, the theme was how in the present day, elderly parents are neglected or even abandoned. I learnt then, that this sort of thing happens not only in America and India but also in China. By the way, on both occasion, there was young Chinese boy who literally stole the show. He was a great hit, and Swami liked his acting very much.

A word now about Athithi Yajna. This had special relevance to ancient times, when Sannyasis wandered across the land. Sannyasis are, by definition, renunciates. They have no family, no home, no money, no nothing. They wander supposedly to visit holy shrines but during their wanderings, they always speak about God and spread the good word. In those days, when a Sannyasi came to a village, the people of the village would welcome him and offer hospitality. They considered it not only an honour but also a duty to do so, since that was what was commanded by the Vedas. Suppose the villagers had not done this, the Sannaysis could not have played their role and contributed to Society. The Vedic philosophers knew all about system management. If an institution was beneficial, it had to be sustained, and a procedure had to be devised for it.
The same goes for Bhuta Yajna. We have in India a festival called the Naga Panchami when the snake is worshipped. People are petrified when the very word snake is heard; yet, in those times, it was considered a duty to worship the snake. The Vedic seers might not have known all the details we know about ecological balance but this they certainly knew. Everything in the Universe has been created by God with a purpose. This applies to everything from the hydrogen atom to the black hole. We may or may not know about the purpose but a purpose there certainly is in the Divine Master Plan.
Today, the Green people and such others make a lot of noise about the environment. Very good and very necessary. But why this need? Because people have forgotten all about Bhuta Yajna. In Ecuador, they want to cut down pristine rain forests to drill for oil. In Alaska, the wilderness is being disturbed for oil. In China, huge dams are being built so that more electricity can be generated. A Chinese environmentalist was asked about these dams. She said that the dams were a disaster. She was then told, “But if dams are not built, then more coal would have to be mined. Mining is a dangerous activity and so many people are being killed. Moreover, coal-fired power stations will belch carbon dioxide. So, is it not better to generate electricity out of water from dams than from coal?” The environmentalist replied, “I think there is yet another alternative. It is to decrease our desires, our wants and our consumption. Then we would not need so much electricity. And when we do not need extra electricity, we do not have to build dams or mine more coal.”
So this lady has, by her own reasoning, come to the same conclusion that formed the basis of Vedic Society; only, the Vedic seers linked it all always to God.
Let me wrap up. Man married mainly to sustain Dharma, with his wife as an equal partner. He had his part to play and she had hers. Nothing was considered inferior and nothing was considered superior. Duty, responsibility and obligation formed the core of one’s life. The Vedic seers were firmly of the view that it was only when these virtues were given primacy, that there would be harmony in Society and human life could be sustained properly. Today, most virtues are summarily dismissed on one of two counts. Either one says it is irrelevant or one says it is not workable in this day and age. I believe both arguments are false and escapist.
What Is Freedom?
Duty, responsibility and obligations are often evaded in the name of freedom. What is this so-called freedom? People say freedom means one can do what one likes, in an unfettered manner. But seldom do people who talk like this realise that they are not really free but a slave to their senses and Mind. Who is the one who is really free? Swami says the one who is rid of attachments and the dictates of the body, the senses and the Mind is the one who is really free.
Why is there so much obsession with freedom to do what one likes? I heard an American author the other day on the radio. He put it like this. He said that these days, the Media, all owned by rich barons, want to deliver us lock stock and barrel to the big corporations, so that we buy what they want us to buy, and invest our money where they want us to invest. This is not as far fetched as it might seem. I shall not go into this topic here, but there is a strong empirical correlation between the growth of advertising, the craze for freedom, the growth of consumerism, etc.
All those who are swept by the glitter and glamour of so-called freedom, and all the joys it is supposed to confer, are totally oblivious to social costs. Those who want to grab wealth do so at the expense of individuals and Society. Ultimately, it is Society that pays, and pays heavily too. All this is well known of course, but ostrich-like, everyone wants to hide from the truth because it is so inconvenient.
Vedic Society was built on the concept that since Society and Nature are what sustain us all, they must receive primacy and not the individual. Marriage too was seen in this total framework, and not in terms of romance or sense gratification.
